The Apartheid Museum

The most authentic place to learn about the Apartheid story of South Africa that enfolded during the 20th century is the Apartheid Museum. It is the first museum to chronicle the rise and fall of apartheid. The museum operates through donations, sponsorships and contributions.

A diverse team of talented historians, designers, curators and film-makers were involved in the design and creation of the Apartheid Museum. A huge collection of provocative photographs, film footages, artifacts and text panels tell visitors the story of the state-sanctioned racial discrimination and the struggle by the people to overthrow the tyranny. Twenty-two individual exhibition areas highlight the dramatic and emotional saga of the Apartheid Era.

The museum was built as part of a tourism attraction strategy. Casinos which were given a license to be built in the region were required to also construct the Apartheid Museum to generate interest in tourism. A consortium by the name of Akani Egoli or Gold Reef City won the bid and built the museum at a cost of almost 80 million rand over an area of seven hectares. It employed a number of leading architectural firms to conceptualize the design of the museum. As a result, the museum is a wonderful example of good design and space.

The Apartheid Museum is closed only on Mondays, and during Good Friday and Christmas. On all other days, it works from 9 am to 5 pm. The museum hopes to show the world that South Africa acknowledges its oppressive past and is working towards a better future for the South African people.
